“Islets” for disabled orphans

In the Soviet times the authorities tried to place the orphanages for disabled children as possible from the people’s eyes. People with physical defects or mental problems were taken away from the streets and were not allowed to be put for guardianship into “ordinary” establishments of health protection. Loneliness for such a person meant inevitable eviction into an old people’s home and disabled persons or some another alike establishment. 17 years have passed since the USSR breaking but the consequences of that disgraceful and shameful state politics are felt and seen nowadays.

Till the end of 2007 there existed and functioned 56 children’s orphanages of the system of the Ministry of labour and social politics of Ukraine. Most of them are scattered around sparsely populated towns, settlements and villages. There abided 7158 children, among them 3044 are orphans and children who are deprived of parent’s care. In face 43% of above mentioned children are disabled at the same time.

One of such orphanages is Sniatyn’s orphanage for children for orphans and disabled children. 110 children are brought up and educated there. All of them have moderate mental backwardness and some have other diseases and discords (specifically cerebral paralysis, epilepsy, Down’s syndrome, underdevelopment of speech, etc.). More than a half of them are orphans. The social-oriented rehabilitation workshops where children take a work rehabilitation and master a simple working professions, little farms where children take care of, rear and breed porpoises, hamsters, parrots which favours psycho-neurological rehabilitation of the children, workshops where macaroni and besoms “Sorgo” are produced and made, shoemaker and tailor workshops and also a lot more is created and made tanks to the efforts of the administration and collective body of this orphanage.

The budget maintenance to cover all the needs and expenditures of the orphanage is not enough. In particular, the orphanage lacks greatly in modern therapeutic-sanitary and other rehabilitation equipment. Beginning from from 4th August 2008 the Advocacy Orphan’s Organization “Belief in Future” starts the charitable purpose support action to gather the money to buy such the equipment.
